About CMAA

Medical administrative assistants, also known as medical secretaries, perform administrative functions for a hospital or clinic using their knowledge of medical terminology and applications. They can work in a variety of locations with common job titles like unit secretary, medical office assistant, patient coordinator or admissions coordinator.

This is a unique role in that it combines both direct and indirect patient care duties. It requires a strong balance of administrative skills and interpersonal abilities.

Duties of A CMAA

  • Schedule and coordinate appointments for patients

  • Assist patients with initial paperwork

  • Accurately update and maintain patients health records

  • Communicate test results to patients when directed by physician or nursing professional

  • Transcribe all notes and documents related to treatments

  • Answering telephone calls

  • Day-to-day support operations

  • Perform administrative tasks such as high quality customer service to patients

  • Manage both the front and back of the office including billing support, scheduling, coding, patient communication, and filing
